Where to find the engine model number

The identification numbers (MODEL NUMBER, TYPE NUMBER, and CODE NUMBER) on a Briggs & Stratton engine is typically stamped directly onto the engine, onto the valve cover, or printed on a label that is affixed to the engine. The model number will be 11-12 characters long and can be found in one of many locations, including: by the starter, on the cylinder shield, on the metal shield, on the valve cover, above the spark plug, in front of the engine, above the muffler, or on the fuel tank.

The MODEL NUMBER can be found on a label on the engine. All Honda engines model numbers start with the letter “G,” such as “GX610” or “GXV160” which indicate the engine series. Vertical engines will include a “V.” The engine TYPE CODE is stamped into the side of the engine, usually close to the SERIAL NUMBER. Engine type codes may be up to 4 characters. If a code is less than 4 characters, you may see asterisks as placeholders (i.e. an engine stamped with QX** is a QX type engine.)

The model CODE NUMBER is the first 6 characters (FR651V) and it is generally located on the engine block or fan shroud. The first two letters (FR) indicates the series or engine family. The first character in the code number indicates either a 2-stroke (T) or a 4-stroke (F) in the series. The numbers (651) indicates the displacement of the engine. The sixth character (V) indicates crank shaft orientation. “V” indicates a vertical engine while “D” indicates a direct/horizontal engine. The SPECIFICATION CODE (AS38) indicates the recipe of parts needed to make a specific engine and the identity to Kawasaki. Knowing the spec code is crucial to look up parts efficiently. The first digit in the spec code (A) is the revision code. Revision codes start with “A” and move a letter higher as parts are changed. The second, third, and fourth characters of the spec code (S38) indicate exactly how an OEM ordered an engine. The E/NO number under the barcode refers to the SERIAL NUMBER.

Kohler engine identification numbers (MODEL NUMBER, SERIAL NUMBER, and SPECIFICATION NUMBER) hold the keys to efficient repair, ordering the correct parts, and engine replacement. These are printed on a silver decal attached to the blower housing on the side of the engine cover.
